The Path of the Humanist

The path of the humanist is the path of the hero on the Hero's Journey, venturing forth into the inmost cave. It is there within the dragon's den of our own inner conflict that we find the elixir, our unique understanding of what it means to be human, the elixir that we bring back to the suffering community: eternal optimism for a world gone pessimism.

And on this journey our motto will be: We can always do little better. We can always smile a little more, we can always care a little more, and each day we'll work a little harder to build a better legacy to pass on to those who follow,

That one day our children might know a world that is truly free...

Legacy as the Meaning of Life

As responsible citizens of our society, we must ask ourselves, what sort of legacy are we living at this moment, the legacy that one day becomes the world we leave to our children? And what will it be, this world of the future that they inherit, a fearful, revengeful world or a society of peace, love and harmony. Will it be a society that punishes out of fear and revenge or one that instructs out of compassion and understanding?

When our children have problems learning how to negotiate their world, will we have a place for them to go to learn a better way, one that is healthy, creative and safe, a real learning environment, or will we allow the hard-line, punishment system to pick them up by default and subject them to the tragedy of billy-club corrections?

Will our children roll their tanks into other countries and perpetuate the fallacy of war as we have taught them? Will the planet have clean air or will our children be forced to live under an amber dome? Will there be blue skies or yellow; will birds sing or forever be silent; in our vast wilderness, will wild animals grace our landscape or will they too become a thing of the past? Will there be a rain forest or nothing but a barren memory, and will the seas teem with exotic creatures or will they go the way of our lakes and rivers, choked with sludge and toxic waste? This legacy of humankind, what will it be?

Just what impact will our footprints have on the world? Have we lit candles along the Hero's Journey that our young people might have a better view of the road ahead? Have we sown the seeds of eternal optimism in a world gone pessimism? Have we played the role of the hero in the lives of those around us? Our children are always watching.

Do we cheat, lie and steal, cause strife and discord in our groups; do we contribute to the negative vibration of the world? Have we led others astray because of the separatist path we have chosen? Is our morality a true morality, one taught us by the Nazarene or is it paradox morality? Are we one who is always politically correct, one who won't say "fuck" but won't give a handout to a homeless person?

And do we have a paradox human nature, one that claims to be pro-life yet calls for the blood of John Allen Muhammad and others sitting on death row? Do we repay injury with anger and revenge or do we set the hero's example through forgiveness, examples that show our own unique understanding of what it means to be human? Generally, what have we done to make this a little better world?

When posterity reads our epitaph, what will it say? "Here today and gone tomorrow?" Or will it say: "The world is a little better place today because she was here yesterday?"

As we take a hard look at what's happening in penology, the media, Hollywood and politics, the choice is ours; the world is ours to make of it what we will, the legacy we leave behind for our children. Clearly, we are swiftly approaching a crossroads; the pendulum has swung.

It's time for a change, time to say no to a corrupt and failed system that will not change, time to change the world around it, time to stop sending our children to the den of the wolves, time for a New Consciousness Revolution.

The Eight Principles of The New Humanism

1) There is only one thing expected of us in life and that is to be a real person, and the only way we can do that is to care about people.
2) Caring about people is the practical application of humanism.
3) Humanism is the Spirit of Oneness at work in the world.
4) Our work of a higher purpose is greater than we are.
5) The most perfect gift we can give to the world is our unique understanding of what it means to be human.
6) The meaning of life is legacy.
7) We can believe what we want to believe, but all we have for sure in the world is each other.
8) We are all One.
